Our Vision

At The Birrarung Project, we envision a future where the Yarra River is a thriving waterway integral to daily life in Melbourne. We empower local and international communities to become active participants in revitalising the river, fostering a strong sense of community and environmental stewardship. Our objective is simple, achieve success, and become obsolete.

REVITALISE

We create technologies to tackle Birrarung River pollution, focusing on closing the source and repairing over 150 years of damage done.

RECONNECT

Our objective is simple - make ourselves obsolete. Once we've successfully addressed the pollution problem and restored the river's health, our work is done.

RENEW

Fostering a strong sense of community and environmental stewardship among individuals, corporations, and governments in Melbourne.

The Pollution Problem

More than 382 million pieces of toxic plastic, e-bikes, e-scooters, laundry baskets, shopping trolleys, and traffic cones enter the Birrarung River each year. It’s time to take action to protect our ecosystems, health, and economies.

Get Involved

Join our community of environmentally conscious creators, and help us improve the health of the Yarra River.

The Birrarung Project acknowledge and respect Victorian Traditional Owners as the original custodians of Victoria’s land and waters, their unique ability to care for Country and deep spiritual connection to it. We honour Elders past and present whose knowledge and wisdom has ensured the continuation of culture and traditional practices.
